Functions
The Directorate  perform the following functions: - 

• To co-ordinate safety in land transport;
• To lead efforts for protection of environment on the regulated sectors;
• To oversee mandatory inspection of public service vehicles and goods carrying vehicles;
• To maintain register of operators, drivers and crew of public service vehicles and goods carrying vehicles;
• To develop guidelines for examination and certification of drivers as well as registration of crew of public service vehicles and goods carrying vehicles; 
• To issue, renew and cancel drivers’ certificates of authorization as well as crew registration certificates; and
• To liaise with stakeholders including National Environmental Management Council (NEMC), Police, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry responsible for transport and other regulators on issues of safety and environment.
